The documentary immerses the viewer in the musical universe of an era. In the 1980s, millions of young Europeans gave in to the maddening rhythm of a music that mingled catchy synthesized sounds, bizarre English lyrics and addictive electronic beats. The visionary video clips are also legendary. It was the world of Italo Disco: Born in Italy, promoted in Germany, it made the whole world dance.
The documentation by Alessandro Melazzini describes the emergence and development of a multifaceted genre of music. It delves into the creative, commercial and productive realms of a sociocultural phenomenon and an entire music industry. Lovingly compiled archive material is paired with interviews with artists and protagonists of that era. These include Sabrina Salerno, Johnson Righeira, Savage and the La Bionda brothers, as well as hip DJs and experts, including DJ Hell and Mathias Modica. With the help of rousing and pulsating rhythms of well-known songs from that era, but also cult songs that are less well known to the general public, “Italo Disco – The Glitter Sound of the 80s” takes the viewer on a journey of discovery of a sound that is both commercial and forward-looking. The sound of an era that is very often described but not always really understood. This film comes very close to the mystery of Italo Disco.
